Freetown, Sierra Leone – Myk Berewa, the Director of Communications in the Office of President Julius Maada Bio, is facing mounting criticism and calls for his resignation following a controversial social media post widely condemned as tribalistic and unprofessional.
In a recent Facebook post defending the Bio administration’s infrastructure achievements, Berewa stated:
“Here’s what President Bio achieved with roads and bridges in his first five years. However, some Kamaras, Koromas, Contehs, Kanus, Sesays, and Banguras might dismiss it as false. Yet, facts remain unchanged even when denied or ignored.”
The post, which named several of Sierra Leone’s most common ethnic surnames, has sparked public outrage, with many accusing Berewa of promoting tribal bigotry and deepening national divisions.
Sierra Leoneans on social media reacted with anger and disappointment. One commenter wrote: “This is what you get when you hire a nurse to be your communication director… It’s sad. There is nowhere this is professional or acceptable.”
Others pointed out the post’s broader implications, particularly for loyal supporters of the ruling SLPP party who bear the surnames mentioned. “I know a lot of SLPP-faithfuls who carry Sesay and other surnames mentioned. Going by this post, it means they don’t believe in President Bio’s achievements,” another wrote.
Critics argue that Berewa’s comments undermine national cohesion and the professionalism expected of a presidential spokesperson. Given the country’s history of a brutal decade-long civil war, citizens have called for greater sensitivity in public communication—especially from those at the highest levels of government.
“This is not just poor judgment,” said one political analyst. “It’s a breach of trust and an insult to citizens who expect unity and respect from State House.”
As pressure mounts, it remains to be seen whether President Bio’s office will issue a formal response or take disciplinary action against Berewa.
