Press Freedom Day: A Call to Defend the Voice of the People

By Kandeh Sesay

As we celebrate World Press Freedom Day today, May 3rd, I want to take a moment to reflect on just how vital a free and independent press is in any democratic society. A lively media landscape isn’t just a constitutional right—it’s the very heartbeat of democracy.

A free press empowers an informed public, shines a light on abuses of power, and stands strong against censorship and authoritarianism. When information flows freely, accountability flourishes. But when the press is silenced, democracy starts to fade away.

I urge my fellow journalists across Sierra Leone to stay true to our sacred mission—to inform, educate, and entertain the public with honesty and integrity. Even in tough times, we must remain committed to serving the people.

At the same time, I call on the Sierra Leone Police and the Cyber Unit to put an end to the intimidation and harassment of journalists who are unjustly targeted by state powers. Journalism is not a crime. Journalists are not the enemies of the state—we are the voice of the people.

On this World Press Freedom Day, let’s renew our shared commitment to defending press freedom, holding those in power accountable, and ensuring that the truth continues to shine through, no matter how dark things may get.
