Freetown, Sierra Leone — A man accused of breaking into a home and stealing electronics and other items valued at nearly Le29,950 has been committed to the High Court for trial.
Gibrilla Sesay, alias Akuna, and Abubakar Barrie, both laborers, appeared before Magistrate Sahr Kekura of the Pademba Road Court No.1 on Wednesday, 7th May 2025. They were facing two counts: Burglary and Larceny under Section 25(1) and 13(a) of the Larceny Act of 1916, and Receiving Stolen Goods contrary to Section 33(1) of the Larceny Act of 1965.
According to police prosecutors, on Monday, 9th September 2024, at No. 105 SS Camp, Regent Village in the Western Area Rural District, Sesay unlawfully broke into the dwelling house of Gibrilla Kamara and stole one black laptop computer, two Apple iPads, and other assorted items totaling Le29,950 in value.
The second count alleged that on the same date and location, Abubakar Barrie knowingly received the stolen items.
No plea was taken from either accused during the proceedings.
Led by Inspector Kadie Taylor, the prosecution presented three witnesses. After reviewing the evidence, Magistrate Kekura ruled that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against the first accused, Gibrilla Sesay.
“I am satisfied that there is sufficient evidence to warrant the committal of this matter to the High Court for trial,” Magistrate Kekura stated.
However, the second accused, Abubakar Barrie, was discharged under Section 118 of the Criminal Procedure Act No. 32 of 1965, after the court found that the prosecution failed to present enough evidence against him.
The first accused remains on continuing bail, and the matter will proceed to the High Court in the coming weeks.
