The proposed discussion on welfare support for sitting Members of Parliament has sparked public debate, with some citizens questioning whether such benefits should take priority over support for vulnerable groups facing economic hardship.
The proposal, reportedly raised by the Leader of Government Business in Parliament, Hon. Matthew S. Nyuma, who represents Kenema District, has been defended on the basis of being a fundamental human right. However, critics argue that government resources should instead focus on addressing the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable citizens.
Speaking to this medium, Madam Abibatu Taylor of Sussex, United Kingdom, said the proposal should be reconsidered, arguing that lawmakers already receive various benefits, including salaries, allowances, housing support, transportation benefits, and opportunities to attend official engagements.
She questioned the justification for additional welfare support for parliamentarians, noting that many citizens continue to struggle with basic needs, including education, healthcare, and livelihood challenges.
Taylor said Members of Parliament should prioritize policies that reduce poverty, create employment opportunities, and improve living standards for their constituents, rather than pursuing benefits that may place additional pressure on public finances.
She further warned that additional spending from the Consolidated Revenue Fund could affect funding for development projects, particularly at a time when Sierra Leone faces revenue constraints and significant national obligations.
While acknowledging the role of Parliament in governance, Taylor called on lawmakers to consider the country’s economic realities and the hardships faced by ordinary citizens before approving any welfare package.
She urged the Speaker of Parliament to carefully review the proposal, arguing that national resources should be directed toward programmes that improve the welfare of the wider population.
