The Cyber Crime Unit of the Sierra Leone Police has issued a public alert warning mobile phone users against sharing sensitive information, including passwords, Personal Identification Numbers (PINs), and One-Time Passwords (OTPs), with unknown callers.
The police warned that cybercriminals could use such information to gain unauthorized access to mobile money wallets, WhatsApp accounts, and other personal data, thereby exposing subscribers to financial and identity-related risks.
The alert has prompted concerns among some citizens, including Justine Wright of Campbell Street, who questioned the preparedness of mobile network operators and commercial banks in strengthening systems to prevent cyber-related fraud.
Speaking to this medium, Wright said financial institutions should invest more in advanced security technologies to protect customers from increasing cyber threats. He argued that while customers often bear the consequences of hacked accounts, service providers should also take greater responsibility in ensuring robust security measures are in place.
He further raised concerns about the implementation of regulations requiring SIM card registration, noting that weaknesses in the process could make it easier for criminals to acquire and misuse unregistered SIM cards for fraudulent activities.
According to Wright, some SIM cards are reportedly used for short periods and discarded, making it difficult for authorities to trace cybercriminal activities. He also called for stronger monitoring mechanisms to prevent the misuse of SIM cards.
The police have also advised citizens against sharing images of their national identification cards on social media, warning that such information could be exploited by cybercriminals.
While commending the Cyber Crime Unit for raising public awareness, Wright said more coordinated efforts involving law enforcement agencies, mobile operators, financial institutions, and the public are needed to effectively combat cybercrime in Sierra Leone.
The warning comes amid growing concerns globally and locally over online fraud, digital identity theft, and the need for stronger cybersecurity measures.
