In a bid to strengthen their partnership, the Executive of the Guild of
Newspaper Editors – Sierra Leone (GoNE – SL), on Friday 3 October, 2025,
paid a courtesy call on the management of Africell at their Wilberforce office
in Freetown.
Introducing the Executive, GoNE-SL’s Public Relations Officer Komba Fillie,
underscored the importance of the meeting. He lauded the role of the media
and thanked Africell for accepting their invitation.
Chairman of GoNE – SL Thomas Dixon, commended Africell for its
contributions as one of the leading and oldest mobile companies operating
in Sierra Leone. He explained that the visit was to present the Guild’s new
strategic plan.
The Chairman said the Guild is planning to securing a permanent
secretariat and acquire a communal printing press operating on a costrecovery model.
He stated that this venture would reduce operational costs for members,
increase efficiency, and strengthen the media landscape.
He further assured Africell of the Guild’s commitment to professional
journalism through self-regulation and responsible reporting.
In his response, Media Manager of Africell Abdul Karim Sesay recalled his
strong past relationship with the media, acknowledging the expertise
required to succeed in the field.
He noted that Africell has been operating in Sierra Leone for many years and
has a consistent history of supporting media organizations, including the
Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) and over 70 radio stations.
He assured the Guild of Africell’s support, particularly in the digital arena,
which is in sync with the network’s own strategic direction.
Abdul Karim Sesay ended by encouraging the Guild to regularly seek
support from the company to expand on the existing relationship, citing the
vital role of the media in identifying institutional lapses and improving
performance.
