Hungary and ANOCA Sign a Strategic Elite Sports Accord

BY: Adama M Sesay

The Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, represented by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjártó, recently signed a historic elite sports cooperation agreement with the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), led by its President, the Honourable Mustapha BERRAF. Sports Minister Adam Schmidt, NOC President Zsolt Gyulay, and IOC member Balázs Fürjes were present at the signing.

Members of the Executive Committee, including Mrs. Filomena Fortes, Second Vice President; Mr. Alfred Foloko, Third Vice President; Engineer Habu Ahmed Gumel, Treasurer General; and Mr. Abderrahmane Hammad, ANOCA Zone 1 Representative, were also present at the signing ceremony from the ANOCA side.

The Hungarian Foreign Minister spoke at the event and stated that his nation is prepared to assist ANOCA and sports in Africa.

This historic agreement opens up exciting possibilities for both sides to advance and improve African sports prowess.

The two main pillars of the ground-breaking collaboration are developing the skills of African sports leaders and training top athletes.

The agreement calls for: arranging technical training courses; hosting African athletes in Hungarian centers of excellence; and organizing training cycles for NOC executives in association with esteemed Hungarian establishments.

ANOCA and Hungary’s partnership is a prime example of strategic, astute sports diplomacy. In addition to giving Africa a rare chance to accelerate its development by utilizing sports’ capacity as a catalyst for political, economic, and human advancement, it also enhances Hungary’s global influence through sport.

This deal lends legitimacy to the African Olympic initiative, according to Mustapha BERRAF, who has continuously argued for equitable and creative North-South collaboration: “African sport deserves to be supported with respect, ambition, and rigor.” “This agreement represents a triumph for vision, communication, and the determination to progress together,” he stated.

Moreover, the Budapest Accord is a strategic tool for influencing the direction of African sport, not only a goodwill agreement. It seeks to solve a persistent gap: the absence of facilities for continual training of African CEOs and leaders in sports. By strengthening NOC leaders’ managerial and technical skills, ANOCA is addressing the core causes of sustained performance.

For athletes, it offers equally significant advantages: access to state-of-the-art facilities, top-notch scientific coaching, and competitive European settings will assist to hone the already enormous potential of African talent.

Additionally, it will be a chance to start a new generation of athlete-builders who have been taught in both the governance and sport cultures.

This deal is completely consistent with ANOCA’s 2036 development plan, which includes positioning an African nation as a possible Olympic host.

The only way this dream—which IOC Honorary Life President Thomas Bach himself has supported—can come true is if the continent unifies its organizational, human, and athletic underpinnings.

At a time when the world is celebrating the values of peace, unity and personal achievement through sport, the agreement between ANOCA and Hungary stands as a model of solidarity and visionary cooperation.

It shows that Africa is not just asking for help, but for structured partnerships based on mutual respect and excellence. African sport is therefore entering a new era, and Budapest could well be one of its founding milestones.
