Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr and Stakeholders Visit the Site of the Second FCC Early Learning Adventure Center at Kroo Town Road Market

21/4/2021

Mayor Aki-Sawyerr visited the site currently being renovated as the second Early Learning Adventure Center at Kroo Town Road Market. This early learning center closely follows the opening of the first at Congo Water Market in October 2020 as the Mayor continues working to deliver her campaign promise to support pre-school education for children of market women within the municipality

.During the site visit, the Mayor met with the contractor, Alpha Sesay of Sewa Enterprises and General Services, to get an update on the status of the renovation of the building where 40 children of market women, aged 0-5 years, will receive free pre-school education. The renovation of the space is over 50% complete and it is expected to be completed within a month.

In her statement, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr shared that she is passionate about these Early Learning Centres as they will provide children from low-income families the head start they need to keep up with their peers from more affluent backgrounds, ignite their interest in learning and help them realize their full potential.

The Kroo Town Road Early Learning Adventure Center will be at the top of the 1895 historic market structure and it will have 3 classrooms, 2 toilets, a toy room, storage, and staff offices. Funding for the construction/renovation of the centers and 2 years of free education for the first two centers were funded by a US philanthropist, Mrs. Sonia Gardner. Councilor Mantenneh Conteh of Ward 430 expressed her gratitude for the center and has already started engagements with market women to share the importance of early childhood education and encourage enrollment of their children.

Also in attendance at today’s site visit was the Ariana Oluwole, education consultant from Narnia Educational Group, the market chairman, ward development committee members, representatives from the FCC engineering and education departments, market women and community stakeholders.
