The Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, Julius Daniel Mattai, has described Sierra Leone Mining Week 2026 as a major success and a strong indication that the country can host world-class mining and investment events.
Speaking during the closing ceremony on Saturday, 23rd May 2026, Minister Mattai praised the participation of investors, mining companies, development partners, women, and young people who attended the four-day conference despite heavy rains.
“Responsible mining without shared prosperity is incomplete,” the Minister stated, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring that the mining sector benefits communities and supports national development.
He said this year’s theme, “Resources, Value Multiplication and Shared Responsibility,” reflects the government’s vision to transform mining from a purely extractive industry into a driver of jobs, investment, and economic growth.
Minister Mattai also highlighted reforms introduced by the Ministry of Mines and the National Minerals Agency, including improved accountability systems, digital access to mining information, and stronger governance measures.
He commended sponsors, exhibitors, and international partners for supporting the event, noting that Mining Week 2026 successfully brought together investors, financiers, regulators, and civil society groups from around the world.
The Minister further praised the strong involvement of women and young people, describing them as key players in the future of Sierra Leone’s mining sector.
Mining Week 2026 featured discussions on financing, infrastructure, environmental governance, community development, gender inclusion, and youth participation in mining.
Minister Mattai concluded by encouraging Sierra Leoneans to continue promoting collaboration, accountability, and shared prosperity within the mining sector.
