Njala University, Bo Campus, Kowama Location – 23rd May 2025—The Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has this morning handed over textbooks and laboratory items to the Departments of Community Health and Clinical Studies, and Nursing. The donation comes as the MSF Academy concludes its operations in Sierra Leone and seeks to leave a lasting impact on healthcare education in the country.

The event was hosted by Dr. Ahmed Vandy, Head of the Department of Community Health and Clinical Studies, who welcomed MSF officials and dignitaries from the University. Dr. Vandy highlighted the value of the donated materials, emphasizing their potential to enhance teaching and learning within the departments.

Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Njala University, Professor Bashiru Mohamed Koroma, expressed deep appreciation to the organization for the donation and longstanding partnership. In his statement, Professor Koroma noted that while the University is resource-constrained, it relies on its “human assets” to drive development. He reaffirmed the University’s commitment to using the donated items effectively and called for continued collaboration with MSF and similar organizations.

Professor Bashiru Koroma also appealed to the international organization to consider handing over any remaining clinics or training facilities to Njala University. He assured the organization that the University is committed to bringing education to the doorstep of underserved communities and would work to maintain and utilize such resources sustainably.

Speaking on behalf of MSF, Mr. Christian Mangoyo, Head of the MSF Academy in Sierra Leone, detailed the items donated. These included high-volume textbooks, laboratory reagents, equipment, and instructional materials. He explained that the gesture was part of MSF’s strategy to ensure continuity in healthcare training and capacity-building, even as the Academy exits Sierra Leone.

He added that the donation is expected to improve the quality of training and research in the affected departments, equipping the next generation of health professionals with the tools they need to serve effectively.

Dr. Angela George, Head of the Department of Nursing, praised the ongoing partnership between MSF and Njala University. She highlighted the significance of practical training resources in nursing and clinical education and emphasized the need for shared responsibility in building resilient healthcare systems.

Mr. Mohamed M. Kabba, a Lecturer in the Department of Community Health and Clinical Studies, delivered the vote of thanks.
