NEAS Calls for Protection and Reintegration of Deportees

By Mohamed Kamara

Freetown – The Network of Ex-Asylum Seekers (NEAS) convened a high-level stakeholder meeting on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at the Human Rights Commission Headquarters on O.A.U. Drive to discuss and validate a draft deportation policy for Sierra Leone. The engagement brought together representatives from government institutions and civil society organizations (CSOs) to address the challenges faced by deportees and develop a structured approach for their reintegration.

Chairing the event, Commissioner Hasan Samba Yarzah emphasized the urgency of a deportation policy to safeguard the rights of returnees and help them rebuild their lives free from stigma. He reaffirmed the Human Rights Commission’s support for the initiative and encouraged stakeholders to contribute meaningfully to ensure a comprehensive and effective policy.

The Director of Migration and Child Trafficking, Madam Kargbo, commended NEAS National Coordinator Abdulai Daramy for his relentless efforts in advocating for deportees’ welfare. She highlighted the hardships faced by deportees upon their return and stressed the need for a practical, solution-driven framework to support their reintegration into society.

During the session, NEAS presented a 24-page booklet titled “Sensitization on the Draft Deportation Policy for Deportees”, bearing the slogan “Fighting Against Inhumane Deportation – No Chains, No Handcuffs.” The document outlines key recommendations for a humane and structured deportation process.

The meeting saw active participation from officials representing the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Social Welfare, and various CSOs. As discussions progress, stakeholders are hopeful that the finalized policy will create a fairer and more supportive system for deportees returning to Sierra Leone.
