New Paramount Chief Sworn In as MP, Pledges Loyal Service and Integrity

By Shadrach Aziz Kamara

In a formal and dignified ceremony at the Sierra Leone Parliament, a newly elected Paramount Chief was officially sworn in as a Member of Parliament (MP), vowing to serve the nation with diligence, discipline, and unwavering commitment to the Constitution.

The ceremony, conducted under Standing Order 18 and in accordance with the Third Schedule of the 1991 Constitution, was officiated by the Clerk of Parliament. In keeping with parliamentary tradition, the new MP recited the oath of office, pledging loyalty to the Republic of Sierra Leone and promising to defend the Constitution and serve faithfully—concluding with the solemn words, “So help me Allah.”

Following the oath, the Clerk of Parliament presented the new member with two symbolic instruments: the 1991 Constitution and the Standing Orders of Parliament. Described as his “guardian angels,” these documents are intended to guide the Paramount Chief in his legislative role.

Speaking on behalf of the Speaker and the entire House, the Clerk extended congratulations, acknowledging the dual responsibility the new member now bears—as both a cultural authority and a national legislator.

In his welcome address, Speaker of Parliament Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas praised the Paramount Chief’s prior service and urged him to embrace a high standard of commitment and conduct. He emphasized the importance of active participation in legislative affairs, noting growing concerns over absenteeism among certain members.

“You will be informed,” the Speaker said pointedly, “that there are members of this House who have developed the habit of absenteeism. Their names will soon be made public to ensure accountability and transparency.”

The Speaker then formally assigned a seat to the new MP and reminded him of the responsibilities tied to his oath. “You are now part of this esteemed institution. Live by the dictates of your oath and serve this nation honorably.”

The induction of the Paramount Chief into Parliament signifies the continued blending of traditional leadership with modern democratic governance—a testament to Sierra Leone’s commitment to inclusive representation and cultural respect within its political system.
