Both local and international observers have condemned the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) for endorsing Hon. Mohamed Bangura as the prospective flagbearer of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP Sorbeh) in a public radio interview ahead of the 2028 multitier elections. Critics argue that Bangura, a sitting Member of Parliament for the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC), has neither resigned from his party nor registered as a PDP member.
A formal complaint from the PDP Executive addressed to the Speaker of Parliament details these concerns:
The Honorable Speaker of Parliament
Parliament of the Republic of Sierra Leone
Tower Hill, Freetown
Subject: Formal Complaint Against Hon. Mohamed Bangura, MP for Constituency 066, Karneneh District
The National Executive Committee and General Membership of the PDP Sorbeh have lodged a formal complaint against Hon. Mohamed Bangura, who continues to serve as an APC MP while publicly claiming leadership of the PDP Sorbeh. Bangura is accused of engaging in activities inconsistent with his official role, including conducting party meetings, registration exercises, printing PDP Sorbeh handbills, and displaying a PDP Sorbeh poster at his former UDM office at 112 Pademba Road, Freetown.
The complaint also cites video evidence of Bangura campaigning under the PDP Sorbeh banner and submitting a parallel PDP Sorbeh executive to the PPRC, which the Commission allegedly did not challenge. The PDP Sorbeh asserts that Bangura is neither a registered member nor a traditional supporter, raising serious questions about the legality and propriety of his actions.
The party is calling for a formal parliamentary inquiry into Bangura’s conduct, emphasizing that continued actions of this nature threaten both party integrity and Sierra Leone’s constitutional framework. The PDP Sorbeh has requested that if any violations are confirmed under the 1991 Constitution, Parliamentary Standing Orders, the PPRC Act, or the PDP Sorbeh Constitution, appropriate actions be taken against him. The party also seeks a transparent update on the status and outcomes of any investigations.
The PDP Sorbeh stresses the importance of constructive political engagement, accountability, and upholding democratic processes to protect the integrity of Sierra Leone’s parliamentary system.
