Sierra Leone Won’t Hand Over Jos

More than a year has passed since the Dutch government formally requested the extradition of alleged international drug trafficker Jos Leijdekkers to serve prison sentences imposed by courts in the Netherlands and Belgium. Leijdekkers has been convicted in those countries on drug trafficking and money laundering charges.

Public attention intensified after a video circulated on social media appearing to show Leijdekkers attending a church service in President Julius Maada Bio’s hometown, where he was seen seated near a woman widely reported to be the President’s daughter.

Leijdekkers has also allegedly been seen in the company of senior government officials, fueling public speculation about his connections and influence within Sierra Leone’s political establishment. However, the government has consistently denied any wrongdoing or protection of the fugitive.

Sources further allege that Leijdekkers has acquired significant real estate holdings and established several companies in Sierra Leone. It is also claimed that some of these businesses are managed or controlled by senior government officials and their close associates. These allegations have not been independently verified.

The recent meeting in Ghana between Sierra Leone’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice and the Dutch Minister of Justice, together with public statements made by both ministers afterward, has generated renewed debate. Critics argue that the absence of any announced extradition agreement suggests the Sierra Leonean government remains unwilling to hand over Leijdekkers to the Dutch authorities.
