SLAJ Intervenes in SLBC Staff Protest to Foster Dialogue and De-escalation The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has intervened in the ongoing staff protest at the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) with the aim of de-escalating tensions and fostering dialogue among all stakeholders. The SLAJ President Ahmed Sahid Nasralla, accompanied by members of his Executive, visited SLBC headquarters on Thursday, 8 May 2025, and held separate engagements with the Director General, the Deputy Director General, and the striking staff.
These engagements were geared toward understanding the issues, restoring calm, and encouraging constructive dialogue between the parties. In a joint address to the staff alongside the Director General, the SLAJ President encouraged employees to return to work while their concerns are addressed through appropriate channels. Staff were advised to organize themselves, clearly document their grievances, and present them in a respectful manner to the relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Labour, the SLBC Board, and the Ministry of Information and Civic Education. “We fully acknowledge the legitimacy of the staff’s concerns,” said the SLAJ President, “but we strongly encourage peaceful and constructive engagement to protect the integrity of this vital national institution.”
SLAJ also intervened in a developing situation involving the police and a staff member accused of making threatening statements. The Association urged the leadership of the Sierra Leone Police to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could escalate the situation further, especially while mediation efforts are underway.
