Trader Committed to High Court Over Possession of Cannabis

By Mamajah Jalloh

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone – Twenty-eight-year-old trader Alie Kamara was on Tuesday, 30th September 2025, committed to the High Court for trial after his final appearance before Magistrate Mustapha Briama Jah at Pademba Road Court No. 1.

Kamara faces one count of possession of prohibited drugs without lawful authority, contrary to Section 8(a) of the National Drug Control Act of 2008. According to police reports, he was found in possession of 80 wraps of a substance suspected to be cannabis sativa (“kush”), weighing 60.4 grams, on Saturday, 22nd June 2024, at Culvert, off Race Course Road in Freetown.

During proceedings, State Prosecutor ABN Taylor Kamara called ASP Joseph Stevens, a forensic analyst attached to the Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU), as an expert witness. ASP Stevens explained that he conducted a presumptive test in the presence of the accused, followed by full laboratory analyses, including chemical and microscopic crystal examinations. The tests confirmed the substance as cannabis sativa, with the forensic report dated 9th July 2024 admitted as Exhibit E1–2.

The defendant cross-examined the witness, but Magistrate Jah noted that the prosecution had established a prima facie case sufficient to warrant committal to the High Court for trial.

Kamara was remanded in custody pending his appearance before the superior court.
