Yenga Displacement Crisis Deepens: Call for National Solidarity as Residents Face Hunger and Hardship

By Mohamed Kamara

A former resident of Yenga, Mr. Yusuf Macfoy, has raised alarm over the worsening humanitarian crisis in the disputed border town, where displaced residents are reportedly facing acute hunger, lack of shelter, water shortages, poor sanitation, and absence of electricity.

Mr. Macfoy, who lived in Yenga throughout Sierra Leone’s 11-year civil war, recounted that the town became strategically important during the conflict due to its proximity to Guinea. He explained that Guinean troops moved into Yenga as a buffer zone to prevent rebels from crossing into Guinea. Over time, the town became a vibrant hub for cross-border trade, especially during the famed Koindu “Luma” market, attracting traders from Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone.

However, Macfoy expressed concern that what began as a cooperative relationship has turned into an ongoing territorial dispute, with Guinean forces continuing to occupy parts of Yenga. He warned that the protracted situation has left displaced residents in dire conditions, and the response from Sierra Leone’s leadership has been insufficient.

“In the face of this crisis, how can we talk about putting ‘Mama Salone’ first when we ignore the plight of citizens suffering through no fault of their own?” Macfoy questioned. “This is not just a diplomatic issue—it’s a humanitarian emergency.”

He is now calling on all Sierra Leoneans, particularly those in leadership positions, to demonstrate patriotism and solidarity. Macfoy urged Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, Paramount Chiefs, and other public officials to sacrifice half of their monthly salaries to support displaced families from Yenga.

“Churches, mosques, philanthropists, and the general public should also contribute through fundraising initiatives to provide relief—especially to women and children who bear the brunt of this suffering,” he appealed.

Mr. Macfoy concluded by emphasizing that true patriotism lies not only in words, but in actions that uphold the dignity and welfare of fellow citizens during times of crisis.
