Young Woman Flees Mountain Cut After Deadly Mob Attack Over Alleged Same-Sex Relationship

By Fatu Conteh

A young woman, identified as Rugiatu Barrie, has reportedly gone into hiding following a violent mob attack in the Mountain Cut community that left another woman dead.

According to residents, the incident occurred after Rugiatu Barrie and her alleged companion, Hawanatu Kamara, were discovered in a private room under circumstances that raised suspicion among community members.

Eyewitnesses claimed that some youths, along with individuals believed to be part of a religious group, forced their way into the room and allegedly found the two women unclothed.

The situation quickly turned violent. Rugiatu Barrie reportedly managed to escape the scene, while Hawanatu Kamara was allegedly seized by an angry mob and beaten.

Reports indicate that she later died from injuries sustained during the assault.

However, police had not officially confirmed the details surrounding her death at the time of publication.

Bockarie Turay, who identified himself as the Youth Leader of the community, described same-sex relationships as unacceptable within the area, warning residents against harboring Barrie and threatening consequences for anyone who might assist her.

In contrast, a relative of Rugiatu Barrie, who spoke on condition of anonymity, appealed for calm and understanding. He alleged that Rugiatu Barrie experienced a troubled upbringing marked by family instability and abuse, which he believes contributed to her current situation. He called on community members and religious leaders to exercise restraint and compassion.

Rugiatu Barrie’s father and stepmother, when contacted, denied claims of abuse and distanced themselves from the allegations regarding her personal life. They declined to comment further.

Meanwhile, a local interfaith leader, Pa Foday Sesay, condemned same-sex relationships, describing them as contrary to religious teachings. He urged authorities to take control of the situation.

As of press time, Rugiatu Barrie’s whereabouts remain unknown, and efforts to reach her have been unsuccessful.

Tension continues to simmer in the Mountain Cut community, with reports that some youths are still searching for her.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
