IGP calls on Drivers to be Intelligent Agents

Police Headquarters, George Street Freetown Tuesday 6 September, 2022- Addressing a cross section of the Sierra Leone Motor Drivers and General Transport Workers Union national executives, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) William Fayia Sellu, has called on drivers to be Intelligent agents to the SLP.

According to the IGP, as transport providers, drivers do not only come in contact with members of the public but also knows their moving in and out.
He therefore urged that the police count on them for support in terms of intelligent.

IGP Sellu continued that he has known the Union for over twenty years and was therefore familiar with their challenges.
He went on to say that he will engage the Director of Traffic for an onwards synergy between the union and the traffic sector on misdemeanors.
“What ever we do as Police, we give it a human face” said the the Police Chief noting that they enforce the law but not in a way that will affect the livelihoods of the people.
He however, cautioned them against taking advantage of the cooperation by going against the law emphasizing that there is no country without law and order.

Punishments he went on to say are always meted out to deter future crimes or offenses. “Compliance is mostly the cause of problem between drivers and police and the later has a constitutional mandate to perform” said IGP Sellu and called on them to pay attention to compliance.

He promised to engage the high court Judge on the ruling after which appropriate action would be sort.

He concluded by calling on the union for the continuation of building a strong partnership and cooperation with partners and stakeholders in the sector.

National President of the Sierra Leone Motor Drivers and General Transport Workers Union Alhaji Alpha Bah, discloses that in their previous meetings with the Director of Traffic Management and Road Safety, they have a common understanding in handling misdemeanors.

He continued that as a union, they have no problem with the police and assured that they have vowed to expose and handover anyone who will bring their image into disrepute for political gain.

He pleaded with the IGP for the implementation and enforcement of the high court ruling for the opening of account for their Bo branch to which he must be signatory.
