The West African Police Information System (WAPIS) was officially launched in Sierra Leone early this year, when current the Inspector General of Police (IGP) William Fayia Sellu was the Director of Crime Services.
As the Director of Crime Services, the WAPIS project was very close to his heart thus he worked round the clock with line Ministries Departments and Agencies, the European union Rep and the West African INTERPOL Coordinator Dr Mohamed Yansaneh in making sure that the project did not end at it launching.
Coincidentally, the full scale implementation of the project commences at the time he is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the SLP.
Speaking at the certification ceremony of twenty eight (28) beneficiaries in quality data control and protection, at the Criminal Investigations Department CID headquarters, Pademba road on Friday 23 September, 2022, the IGP William Fayia Sellu discloses that WAPIS was formed out of the desire to share informations on cross border crimes among member states.
Sierra Leone he said has finally been integrated into the Subregional Africa and global information sharing after lagging behind for years.
Seven months after it launch in Sierra Leone, WAPIS through INTERPOL on Monday 19 September 2022, commenced a five (5) days data collection and processing training for the police, ACC and Immigration department.
Much he said is expected from beneficiaries of the five (5)days WAPIS training which ended today (Friday 23 September, 2022) noting that, data collection is good but equally important is the quality of the data collected.
“This project is close to my heart, it was laughed at a time I was director of crime services, coincidentally, it implementation begin when I am the Chief Executive Officer, I therefore have passion to move it, want to raise the standard of Sierra Leone in this particular direction to merge with other countries” he said
He urged beneficiaries to share informations on criminals and organized crimes.
