Opposition MPs May Reject Alpha Khanu
Less than a month, Alhaji Alpha Khanu will be facing the Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Appointment and Public Service soon, which mean APC Members of Parliament and other opposition political parties in the Committee on Appointment may reject Dr. Alpha Khanu.
Dr. Khanu is one of the longest serving Ministers under the APC government and has served in different ministries; including the Ministry of Information. His controversial appointment by the current SLPP government has raised series of concerns from members of the public. Some supporters and members of the APC party were left in shock as to the level of political handlings of Alpha Khanu who is a strongman of the APC party.
For him to accept to serve as a Resident Minister of the North-West Region, which is an APC stronghold has raised several concerns, some have even described him as a political prostitute, a political shenanigans, whilst members and supporters of the ruling SLPP party believe that the appointment of Alpha Khanu depicts the inclusiveness of the ruling SLPP Government led by His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio.
It is believed that the Appointment Committee of Parliament before interview is conducted on any Presidential Appointee will first seek the views of the members of the public and if there is any negative respond from majority of the public, Committee on Appointment has the power to reject him.
The appointment of Alpha Khanu has left many citizens in mix feelings but some supporters of the APC party have earnestly called on opposition Members of Parliament to oppose or reject the appointment of Alpha Khanu. They further claimed that this will send a strong signal to all politicians to stay true to their people, adding that Alpha Khanu is one of the politicians in the previous administration of Ernest Bai Koroma that rains heavily on the leadership prowess of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio and has accused him of several administrative deficiencies.
Even some members of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party have frown at the appointment of Alpha Khanu by describing it as a ‘suicidal to the progress of the SLPP party’. Others even claimed that Alpha Khanu can never be trusted and have accused President Bio of empowering their enemies.
Also political pundits have described the appointment of Dr. Alpha Khanu as a political trick to get votes from the people of Port Loko district.
Also, the Sacked Minister of Lands Dr. Dennis Sandy and Lawyer Francis Margai served as ministers under former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma and the current government of President Julius Maada Bio of the SLPP party has also bent on in doing the same.
Is politics now a game of change or loyalty?
The rest of Alpha Khanu, Charles Francis Margai, Dr. Dennis Sandy and others will be in the best position to answer this question but people must learn from this that politics is not a game of life and death but to make friends and move on.
The voting patterns in Sierra Leone are very much traditional and except Kono District which is known to be a swing state.
