Ministry of Energy, AUDA-NEPAD Commissions 100 KW Solar Plant for Njala University

The African Union Development Agency (AUDA)-New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) through the Ministry of Energy will today 14th October 2021 Commission a 100 KW Solar Energy Plant for Njala University Hospital.

The project which started in March 2020 has provided sustainable water and electricity to the Njala University Hospital and the Mosongo Community and has also supported the Lower Nursery Demonstration Farm at Njala Campus with a drip irrigation facility.

The high-powered delegation from AUDA-NEPAD arrived in the country on Tuesday 11th October 2021 to inspect and Commission the Project. They held fruitful meetings with the Steering and Technical Committees of the Project comprising Ministries of Energy, Development and Economic Planning, and Njala University.

Highlights of the meetings included resource mobilization for future projects and the sustainability of the current project.

Deputy Minister of Energy, Dr. Eldred Tunde Taylor, and the Development Secretary, Ministry of Development and Economic Planning assured the AUDA-NEPAD delegation of the Government continuous commitment to provide counterpart funding and sustainability inputs to future and current development projects, especially in the Energy sector.

Professor Andrew Baimba, Acting Vice-Chancellor, and Principal, Njala University welcomed the Commissioning of the Project and hinted that Njala University has been hugely deprived since its creation in 1964 from accessing water and electricity from the national grid. The provision of the 100 KW according to him will enhance the effectiveness of the Hospital to serve the staff and student population and the immediate environs.

He assured the AUDA-NEPAD team that his Administration with the support of the Ministry of Energy will sustain the project by transferring some of the surplus power that will not be utilized by the hospital to other areas that the Administration is currently pulling resources to generate power.
