”We Provide Electricity But Gain Little” – EDSA Boss Asserts

By Mohamed Kamara

The Director General of the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA), Mr. Joe Lahai Sormana, has called on everyone to fully support their efforts to combat theft and other irregularities in the Authority’s supply chain. He emphasized that while EDSA is dedicated to fulfilling the nation’s commitment to making electricity available in all homes, there are individuals driven by greed who engage in illegal connections or steal materials and logistics intended for this purpose.

Mr. Sormana made these remarks on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, during the regular press briefing organized by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education at the Conference Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. He explained that the Authority’s mandate is solely to distribute and supply electricity, while bearing the cost of energy supplied by entities such as Kopwership EGTC, Bumbuna, and the West African pool. Currently, these suppliers mainly serve the southern and eastern regions of the country but aim to expand to other areas over time. The Director stated that although they distribute and supply energy, the profits go to the suppliers, leaving the Authority reliant on government subsidies.

Mr. Sormana highlighted the interconnectedness of all substations in the supply chain and outlined ongoing efforts to improve energy distribution and supply. However, he expressed concerns that failure to identify and address those suspected of tampering with cable connections could hinder efforts to extend the supply to other areas. Additionally, he clarified that incidents of electrical sparks in homes and elsewhere are often due to improper handling of meters, rather than faults in EDSA’s connections.
